In 2000, East African Disability (EAD) proudly launched a vital initiative in Somalia, aimed at improving the lives of persons with disabilities. Through this effort, we distributed 200 wheelchairs to individuals across different regions of the country, offering them not just mobility, but also independence and dignity.
This life-changing project was made possible through contributions amounting to $190,000. The support enabled us to reach some of the most vulnerable groups, particularly persons living with mobility impairments, many of whom had been excluded from education, employment, and community life.

Despite this progress, the need remains immense. Thousands of individuals with disabilities in Somalia continue to face barriers in accessing essential services such as:
- Mobility Support: Wheelchairs and assistive devices are still in short supply.
- Physical Therapy: Rehabilitation and physiotherapy services are urgently needed to improve health outcomes.
- Mental Health Support: Counseling and community programs are vital to address trauma and stigma.
- Inclusive Education & Skills Training: Special programs in computer literacy, vocational skills such as welding, mechanics, and small-scale manufacturing are critical to empower persons with disabilities to secure livelihoods and contribute meaningfully to society.
EAD remains committed to expanding these services and advocating for a more inclusive society where persons with disabilities are given equal opportunities to thrive. However, the journey is far from over, and continued support from partners, donors, and the wider community is essential to sustain and grow this mission. Together, we can build a future where disability does not mean disadvantage, but rather diversity, resilience, and strength.
