EAD Services and Benefits for People with Disabilities

East African Disability Covers a couple of services for Intellectual and developmental disabilities in the United States.

Programs we cover

1. Intellectual Disability – ID
2. Developmental Disability – DD

Education

Since it started, The EAD has advocated for students with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) at school. The Arc’s advocacy helped pass the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). The IDEA is a federal law that requires schools to teach all students with disabilities with their peers who do not have disabilities as much as possible. There are still challenges for students with disabilities, including:

    • Segregation
    • Restraint and seclusion
    • Poor transition planning
    • Lack of teacher training

The EAD@ School helps our chapters, parents, and others who are advocating for students with IDD to get the help they need at school. We want students with IDD to graduate, go to college, get a job, and live on their own as much as they can.

Civil Rights

The history of living with a disability in the United States has largely been one of discrimination, segregation, and exclusion from education, work, housing, and even from routine daily activities.

What does EAD focus on? A person with disabilities faces hundreds of challenges in society. Range of barriers to employment opportunities, accommodation, transport, and vocational training or education. So our aim is to protect and give these rights to disabled people, as it’s their basic right.

Employment, Training, and Wages

Competitive, integrated employment is a key part of living a meaningful and inclusive life in the community for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). However, the majority of people with IDD remain either unemployed or underemployed despite their ability, desire, and willingness to work.

EAD takes the responsibility to provide training to scale up disabled people’s skills to get the right job for a living. We did not limit ourselves at this stage, but we also cover a monthly wages program for special persons.
